Tips: Makeup Shelf Life

Bionic's Beauty TipsStill keeping loads of “year-old” or “remember-when” makeup in your kit? If so, get your sniffer to work. That older makeup may cause break-outs, dermatitis or eye infections states Consumer Affairs. And here’s where your sniffer comes into play-

If you are unsure if your makeup item has passed it’s expiration date, open it, and give it a nice strong whiff. Smell funky, rancid or otherwise strange? If so, time to chuck it and replace. Don’t chance causing yourself an infection or trip to the doc for some foundation that could be easily replaced.

  • Eye Make-up: 3 months since the spread of bacteria is so easy. You can extend this a bit by chucking those teeny eye shadow applicators and use your own shadow brushes. BUT BE SURE to wash your brushes at least weekly!
  • Foundation: A water-based foundation will last up to 12 months, oil-based will last up to 18 months. If your water-based foundation dries out before its expiration date, simply add a few drops of alcohol-free toner and shake to mix it in.
  • Lipstick: Experts say 1-2 years. Others say up to 4 years. What everyone agrees on is that if it smells rancid, throw it out, it’s spoiled. Extra tip: If you store lipstick in the refrigerator, it will last longer.
  • Mascara: This product expires rapidly: Throw out after 4 months. Extra tip: If you don’t want your mascara to expire faster than its fresh date, don’t pump the wand in and out — you’re only exposing the product to drying air.

Review: BioInfusion Rosemary Mint Shampoo and Conditioner

The BioInfusion Naturals line, available at Walgreens, is made to resemble the Aveeda and Biolage brand shampoos and conditioners.

Looking to save a few bucks, I picked up the 3 oz trial sizes of BioInfusion Naturals Rosemary Mint Shampoo and Conditioner. The scent is blissful (as long as you like minty stuff- which is super for summer)! This blend is meant for Normal to Fine hair.

The price is certainly not painful, $14.99 for a huge 33.8 oz container.

Shampoo:
Functioned perfectly. No buildup, didn’t weigh by fine hair down, and refreshed my scalp. My hair wasn’t frizzy, fried, or oily after use. I would recommend this shampoo for summer or if you hair does not need too much extra moisturizing.

Conditioner:
Again, the smell is really nice and relaxing. Texture in palm was a little more fluid than I am used to (not thick and creamy) and hence, I had a hard time working it through my mid-length hair. I didn’t really feel that it did a good job on conditioning my slightly dry hair either. I ended up with a slight case of fly-aways the morning after use. If you need a SUPER-LIGHT weight conditioner, this may fit your bill.

Beauty Inside and Out: Eco Feel Good Things

Reusable Shopping Bag
A few ideas that’ll make you feel happy and help the great big ole world we live in.

  • Reuse those plastic grocery bags for small can liners, doggie cleanup, kitty litter scooping, work lunch totes, etc. Hey, clearish-brown plastic is pretty dang fashionable!
  • Conserve power by unplugging your cell phone and laptop charger when you are not using it.
  • Recycle everything possible! If your neighborhood or city doesn’t have a program, contact the waste management company responsible for your area and ask when they plan to implement one.
  • Donate used Ink Jet Toner cartridges to PetSmart. Help the pets and put less in the landfill. You can pick up the donation envelopes in the store, then drop in your cartridge, seal it, and send it off (you don’t even have to pay postage- NO excuses!).
  • Go through your ENTIRE closet. Anything you have not worn in the past 18 months, put it in big bag and donate it to your local Habitat for Humanity, Salvation Army, or charity-of-choice thrift store. In fact, go do it now, before the cold weather and holiday rush sets in.
  • Buy/sell items on sites such as Craigslist to keep stuff from heading to our landfills. If you can’t sell it, post it on your local Freecycle. Trust me, someone out there wants exactly what you have!

Boots Skincare at Target

The famous UK skincare line: Boots, is now available at Target stores nationwide (as well as Target.com). Their No7 Restore and Renew has been selling out like mad. A CVS in New York reported selling 500 tubes by noon in one day! What makes it so special??…

The price for one thing. $21.99 gets you a tube at Target. However, studies have shown that this anti-wrinkle, anti-aging serum compares and BEATS those such as La Pair and Le Mer. Guess I’ll be headed to Target this weekend to pick up a tube.

Also available at Target stores is the full line including cosmetics, the Mediterranean collection, vitamins & supplements, Botanics, and Time Dimension lines.

And while you’re there, don’t forget to pick up some of Sonia Kashuk’s excellent collection!

The sample pack is free, however you do have to pay Shipping and Handling, which came to $4 for USPS shipping. Everyday Minerals seems to have a wealth of color choices, the samples seem nicely presented in teeny sifter pots. Their mineral foundations are offered in 4 “finishes”: Semi-Matte (soft n dewy), Matte (well described), Intensive (high concealment), and Original Glo (for dry to normal skin- dewy glow).

For the minor expense of the S/H, I’ll be excited to get these and start trying them out!
