Do you agree? TB’s Bargain Beauty Buys

by Bionic Beauty on 27.Apr.2010 · 8 comments

I know sometimes we like to browse Total Beauty’s latest articles and chat about whether we agree or disagree with their “beauty lists”. One of their latest caught my eye- “Best Beauty Bargain Buys”.

So, check them out, and let me know if you agree with their list.

I’ll start things off- I definitely don’t agree with the Clairol Perfect 10 hair color being listed. I know their TV ads say that color has won all sorts of awards. Really?!? Who decided those awards? Because readers here on Bionic Beauty have been reporting scalp breakouts, immediate color loss, and oily residue. Doesn’t sound like a bargain to me. I’d much rather go for one of the other drugstore brands or Ion Color from Sally Beauty (plus Ion color is ever CHEAPER than drugstore hair color!!).

And I definitely love that L’Oreal’s EverPure UV Protect spray was listed. That hair care line beats most every salon brand hands down and with room to spare!

I still think you can do better on the sun block price. I use the wal-greens inexpensive store brand with out any greasy feeling, plus its SPF 30. As for hair color, L’Oreal has a 10 min. kit and it cost less than $10 at Wal-Mart.

Excellent point on the sunblock Stacy! I use Banana Boat’s clear zinc SPF 45 for my face since it’s not greasy, helps clear my breakouts, doesn’t clog my face up (or make me sweat even further) and it’s only a couple dollars! I think CVS & Walgreens both have their own brands of clear Zinc pots of sunblock too.

Is the L’Oreal 10 min color better than the Clairol one? I am hesitant to try those 10min dealios since my grays are so resistant to even Clairol’s Gray Solution (which is my fave drugstore hair color). But Ion and Wella at Sally work out to $3 per application for me. Woot! (<-that's me being happy for saving money, ha ha!)

I am not sure… It says that it does, and I know that there regular excellence did really good at covering up her grays. If I use it at some point, I’ll let you know how it works.

Please do! I’d love to hear your thoughts. My grays are uber-stubborn. I even use a “Gray Additive” solution from Sally’s to help cover them. You add 10 drops per ounce of color mixture and then shake/mix and apply like normal. Your friend could add that to her Clairol mix as well. I think it’s about $5 for a bottle that lasts for 30-50 applications at Sally Beauty. I saw there’s a version at Walgreens/CVS now too, but I haven’t tried it yet.

I totally disagree with TB’s inclusion of Clairol’s Perfect 10 color, after personal experience using it last year. Jami’s piece back around a year or more ago exploded with comments regarding this product. I do believe that’s a link to it up above. The only reason I went out and bought another box of the stuff, was to use the unique comb-style applicator bottle with other products. I trashed the rest of the items. The distribution of color I get is more even, for *me*, than if I were to use other methods solely (I use a standard coloring brush as well during each session.). After visiting Sally Beauty Supplies for all the at-home coloring items I needed (LOVE that Ion, woohoo!!), I wouldn’t go back for anything. Ion covers grays SO much better, and it doesn’t wear out in mere days, contrary to what the box states. However, if the product works really well for someone else, fabulous! That’s great! Go with it. I have Jami to thank for directing me to Sally and Ion after discovering her blog last year (through The Cheap Chick, of course — y’all rock).

I really like the Cover Girl Lash Blash mascara, only, I get the Volumizing version, black, not purple or anything. :-)

Tashi, I am pretty sure that Total Beauty included Clairol Perfect 10 and most of the other items on that list because they are advertisers & TB sponsors.

BUT…. I have no proof, so anyone reading this, please don’t jump don’t my throat. I’m just providing *my* opinion, guestimation and thoughts.

And Tashi, I’m like you… once I switched to Ion a few years back; I rarely use something else. Unless it’s Manic Panic’s colorful hair dyes, or occasionally I’ll use Natural Instincts or Fanci-full rinse to coat over my roots or grays to extend time between colorings by a week. Usually I’ll do that when I have an impromptu something come up (event, family dinner, date… oh wait… I haven’t been on a date in years… lol!), and I don’t have time for a full hair color treatment & my grays are showing. If I’m REALLY pressed for time, I just brush some brown mascara over the grays by my temples. :)

Oh, I bet you’re right. You’re entitled to your opinion! :-) I appreciate your disclaimer. Thank goodness for the folks who hold honesty up high.

Hmmm, brown mascara?? My worst outgrowth shows on top — my “skunk stripe”, and at my bangs’ hairline. I can scare the neighborhood kids with my grown out roots, if I don’t do my color promptly. The salon I go to sells temporary spray colors, which would be perfect for the roots during in-between color sessions. My stylist has used them on me before, and they looked great. But they’re so expensive, I wouldn’t buy them even if I could afford it right now.

Ok, this is one of my last comments before I focus fully on the Kentucky Derby. :)

Try one of the Fancifull rinses. They have them at Sally or at most Walgreens. Shampoo, use a regular light conditioner, then let your hair dry about half way. Apply the Fancifull rinse to the areas you need it and it helps blend over the grays. It washes right out at the next shampoo though. They have LOTS of new colors & they’re pretty darn cheap! I picked up a few and have a review coming up.
