Bionic Asks: Your thoughts on men wearing makeup?

Bionic Beauty Asks - Makeup and beauty question blog article series

Society has long set a precedent that only women wear makeup. But times, they are a-changing. There are nail polish lines for guys, top coats to give that matte “no polish” look (Orly’s Nails for Males), and new “men-only” skin care lines being released each month. It’s now accepted for men to color their hair, go to the salon for cuts and styling, and some guys even indulge in manicures and pedicures.

Michael Vartan wears makeup in a good way during an episode of Alias

Agent Vaughn, played by Michael Vartan, in an episode of Alias.

There are certain guys that can definitely pull off the “Yes I’m most definitely wearing makeup” look. Captain Jack Sparrow looked incredibly hot in eyeliner, and Agent Michael Vaughn rocked the look in Alias. Heck, those two look better in makeup than I do (at least in my opinion, ha ha!)!!

Captain Jack Sparrow made eyeliner cool for guys

Cap'n Jack Sparrow - Johnny Depp made guyliner cool!

And whether the the NFL Football fan population wants to admit it or not, all those lovely NFL anchors wear makeup too. Sometimes it’s quite obvious actually. In this day and age with HD TV, it seems some makeup artists haven’t quite mastered the no-makeup-man-makeup look yet.

This week’s Bionic Asks… What are your thoughts on guys wearing makeup? Should it be just be for men on TV or in the movies? Or can an everyday-Joe share our long-beloved concealers and powders?

For my male readers out there (I know there are more than a few) – what do you think of guys wearing makeup? After all, everyone needs to cover a huge, red pimple now and then, right?

I agree that some tv and movie makeup artists seem to occasionally go overboard. For a while when Freddie Prinze Jr.’s character on “24” first showed up this season, I couldn’t stop staring at his eyeliner and seemingly pale face. It seemed to improve as the season went on. Or maybe I stopped noticing it?? Real-life men can wear makeup, it doesn’t matter to *me*. There was once a young man who worked at a restaurant I patronized, who used to wear a lot of makeup. I didn’t care. It was him doing his own thing. (I noticed it at first, but honestly, didn’t stare, as I did on “24”.) Who am I to judge? If they benefit from the use of, pimple creams, whatever, and/or enjoy the other products and cosmetics, cool for them! Just my humble opinion, offered respectfully. 🙂

I think it just depends on the guy.. Johnny Depp looks amazing with eye liner.. My husband would look like a fool 🙂 I like the dark brooding sexy look myself.. I wouldn’t mind a top coat on the nails, but painted no way.. I think facials are okay though I think men need to care about their skin, and try to look clean and well put together. There is nothing worse than the roll out of bed look..

I think that skincare is fine. Taking care of yourself is a must, and I wouldn’t mind it on a guy that I saw on the street or if a male friend wore it. However, as far as the guys that I date, I’m attracted to that manly/rugged type. But with a baby face :]

Ooops, I meant to say that I wouldn’t mind make-up on a guy on the street.

I don’t think anyone should have a problem with guys wearing makeup if that’s really what they want to do. However, I think that if they’re going to wear it, they need to learn how to apply it properly. If you’re spending the money and really do love it, the least you can do is learn how to use it. I’ll make just as much fun of a girl with mannequin-face as I will a guy with the same problem.

Although I do agree that there are a number of TV makeup artists that need to go back to school to learn natural man-makeup application. No man should look like he’s been slapped with a coral-coated blush brush unless that’s the look he’s trying to accomplish. And if it is? *shrugs* Then I question his taste, not that he’s wearing the makeup in the first place.

Michael Vartan is soooo delicious he could wear anything and stop traffic…I loved him in that episode of “Alias” (well, in any episode of “Alias”)…Season 3/Episode 18: “Unveiled,” to be exact…
His eyes are heart-stopping in any light, but in this club scene they sparkle like emeralds…And sexy-but-conservatively-suited Vaughn pulls off a VERY convincing bad boy…
Every cat has a tiger within…

I grew up in the 80s loving hair metal, so I’ve used to loooooeve guys in makeup and big hair. Now unless a guy is in a band, it seems sort of creepy.

I am not a fan of a lot of makeup on women let alone seeing makeup on men, but if a guy wants to put on makeup so be it. Michael Vartan and Johnny Depp, my two favourite actors (number 1 and 2 in that order), rock the makeup, so excellent examples of guys who can wear makeup and look supper hot. Unfortunately there are not that many guys who look like those two.

I think like women, men can also take makeup. It depends upon their own choice.

Like women, I don’t mind cosmetics on a man if it’s done properly. I saw a guy at the airport the day before you posted this who had under eye concealer that was about 3 shades to light for him. Reverse raccoon eyes to the Nth! When I saw this post pop up the next day I had to laugh

Why should women have all the fun? If you’re a guy, and you want to wear makeup, have at it. I love the way Adam Lambert looks – he totally rocks the Adam Ant, glam rock look from the 80’s. And as a child of the 80’s, I heartily approve!!!

I totally forgot about Adam Lambert! Yes, he’s definitely another good example of a guy looking good in makeup!

So basically it sounds like most of us are on the same page- we don’t mind guys wearing makeup in real life, or on TV/movies. And most of us agree that they should learn to properly apply it though too.

Like many of you have said- I am all for people being unique. It takes a lot of self-esteem to step outside the box and I applaud anyone who decides to not follow the sheep-pack! 🙂
