Bionic Asks: What’s your SPF Level?

Bionic Beauty Asks - Makeup and beauty question blog article series

This week’s Bionic Asks What level SPF/sunscreen do you wear on a typical day? And do you have a favorite brand you swear by?

I use Lexli’s SPF 15 Day Lotion (read my Lexli review) under my Purely Cosmetics mineral makeup (which provides another “layer” of coverage) for my face, neck, chest and ears. I also carry a jar of SPF 45 clear zinc sunblock in my purse for touchups. It works great on both my face and body; plus it’s immediately effective since zinc is a physical sunblock (as opposed to chemical sunblocks which take around 30 minutes to be fully effective at blocking harmful sun rays). Oh, and the zinc is great for assisting in clearing up acne and breakouts. It’s perfect for me!

If I am going to be out in the sun for the day- whether it’s the park, driving my car, or walking my dog, I cover my body with SPF 30 or higher. My favorites for full body coverage are Clinique, Hampton Sun, and Coola Total Body organic suncare (review upcoming!). All of which last a long time without irritating my skin or causing body breakouts.

I use SPF 30. I mainly use the kind made for kids and babies because that’s what I get for my kids. It works good when I can remember to apply it to myself, which seems to be hardly at all when you have three kids begging to head to the pool. I am trying to make a conscious effort to change that though.

Umm, I don’t wear sunscreen or sunblock. Yet. I know — bad me. While I rarely visit a pool, lake, or ocean, I should still wear one of those modes of sun protection. I want one that absorbs quickly, isn’t greasy, and most importantly, safe to use on the face (especially around the eyes). I often sit outside in the Spring and Summer to read, and relax outside with family and friends. Anyone have ideas for what I could use? (I will look into those that Jami mentioned.) Right now, I can’t afford Clinique, or similarly-priced lines. Thanks! 🙂

I am head-over-heals in love with Marie Veronique Tinted Face Screen! It is so full of good stuff plus 24% zinc oxide (not nano). It is so lovely on the skin and it has coverage so after cleansing in the morning and applying my vitamin C serum, thet’s all I use! It’s my foundation and sunblock in one.
I just received the new version (Face Screen +) and it is just divine. I can’t say enough! And 24% zinc with no white cast..unheard of! It’s kinda pricey at $45.00 but it is so worth it.
Tashi!! I’m wagging my finger at you! Another I love that is high in zinc is from Purple Prairie. great price, too. And it seems to be everything you are looking for. Zinc is awesome because you don’t have to re-apply like you do wth chemical blocks(kinda hard after you apply make-up!).

Cristina, I know. My bad. 🙂 Even though I am enjoying a very miniscule budget (visible only through a high-powered telescope pointed towards Mars), I will make a concerted effort to finally get some sunblock. Lest I forget, thanks for your product mentions! Where do you you buy those items? Are they easy to find? I’ll Google them as well in the meantime. Thank you!

Did I say “telescope”?? I meant “microscope”, and a more applicable joke. Duh, ME. LOL I need to curb the night-time commentposting.

I once saw one of those huge conical-shaped Asian sun hats at a thrift store. But I didn’t buy it, thinking it wouldn’t stay on my big head. Now I wish I would have, especially with the absence right now of sunblock. My baseball hats are great, but can’t be the end-all and be-all.

I don’t know how old you are, Tashi. But I am pushing (>gasp<) 50. I an tell you that it costs a boatload of cash to fix what years of unprotected sunning did to my face. Invest now. has great prices on all zinc (the best) sunblock. Buy it. Use it everyday. Then when you are sitting in front of the makeup mirror when you're my age, you'll be happy you did.
And that's true about baseball hats..they leave a lot unprotected.

🙂 I’m past 40, but not quite 50. I will find a sunblock soon (I’ll look at the Purple Prairie site as well) within my budget and use it. Every day. Cross my heart.

I use ALBA sunscreen SPF 15 for daily use. I live in the northwest so when the sun does ever come out to play I apply some Neutrogena 85 plus all over.. My friends laugh, but my family are all southerners who spent one to many days in the sun. Pale girls unite!

I use SPF 22 in my day moisturizer, and then carry an SPF 30 in my purse for those days I find myself in the sun more, or longer, than normal.

I’ve been using a generic sunscreen for babies with an SPF of 30, which was a mistake. My usual Aveeno with SPF of 70 was temporarily out of stock and I was too lazy to go to another store. However, I recently learned that sunscreen without ZINC means you have to apply more often. I’ll have to check my Aveeno. Just thought I’d pass that tip on.
