Many of you know that I am a total Harry Potter and Twilight fan-girl. When movies or books I enjoy get released, it usually involves quite a bit of fan-fare on my part. I have a propensity for costuming, or adding little details to my outfits (like my Bella Moonstone ring), which both liven up the experience for me.

I didn’t see the Eclipse movie on opening night, but I did create this Eclipsed-themed nail art. I drew inspiration from the book cover and added some extra highlights to make it a bit more vibrant.

I used two coats of Sally Hansen Salon in Deepest of Violets for the base. Then drew the red ribbon with OPI’s “I’m Not Really a Waitress” and highlighted with Milani’s nail art polish in “Art of Silver”. I topped everything with a coat of Seche Vite.

I thought it would be fun this week to take a little trip down Memory Lane…
This week’s Bionic Asks… How old were you when you started wearing makeup? And when did you actually become more interested in makeup, skincare and the like?

I’ll kick things off-
I started wearing makeup in my Freshman year of high school. Back then it was mostly a bit of CoverGirl’s Clear Complexion powder (the kind that smelled like, and contained, Noxema ingredients) and CoverGirl’s concealer in a lipgloss-wand-type tube. I was prone to acne, so concealer dotted on top was a must for me. My eyes usually just had CoverGirl mascara on my lashes; and I would occasionally wear some brown Revlon eyeshadow, or Wet n’ Wild’s black eyeliner pencil. I didn’t do much experimenting back then. Can you tell I was a CoverGirl fangirl? My mom was, and still is, a Clinique fan. She would usually give me some of the stuff from her Clinique Bonus Time bags. That was always an exciting time of the year for me, but I still kept things minimal. My mom tried and tried to get me to wear more eye makeup. She succeeded for one of my Proms, but before the night was through, I ended up using Qtips to wipe most of it off; I just didn’t feel like me.

I didn’t really start experimenting with color and different makeup looks until my mid-twenties. I found color! I took classes from local makeup artists and dermatologists whenever possible and started branching out to different brands: L’Oreal, Physician’s Formula, Sonia Kashuk and Milani became my favorite brands. I still struggle with occasional acne- mostly from testing so many different skin care regimens and makeup brands for Bionic Beauty. Thankfully now I have the knowledge to clear up my skin, detox it, know which ingredients I need to avoid, and what my skin actually needs to be healthy.

One thing that hasn’t changed in my makeup routine over the years… my love of nail polish. As far back as I can remember, I always kept my toes painted. I consider them my mini artistic canvases!

Last week I showed you Milani’s new Neon nail polish collection, now I’ve got the swatches and reviews of their other Spring 2010 nail polish collection: 3D Holographic.

All of these polishes applied like a dream and wore incredibly well. Milani has a real competitor this year to the pricey “bigger” named polish collections. Smooth application, no cuticle drag, no tip buildup, and the glimmer is small enough that there’s no streaking. And the finish is such a high-gloss!! In these photos, I promise I am not wearing a top coat- absolutely incredible!

I can see these polishes becoming some of my favorites!

Hi-Tech - A translucent citrusy green with gold holo shimmer when light hits it. You can build the color with 2-3 coats (I’m wearing two coats in these photos). It even works for gals with cool-toned skin like me! And yes, I’m a sucker for green nail polish!

3D - A classic bright gold. I was leery of this looking good on my nails since I typically shy away from gold (warms don’t look so great on me), but this one was fabulous! 3D would be perfect for a glamorous evening date; and it looked great layered over the Neon “Totally 80s” polish.

HD - Bright, true silver. In the sun there are pink, blue and an entire rainbow of shimmer! One coat gives a great translucent bling; two to three coats are full coverage. This polish looks awesome with jeans or dark dresses!

Digital - A medium bubblegum pink. Again, this polish is just gorgeous in the sun! Blue, pink, lavender shimmer really catch the eye.

Cyperspace - It’s kind of a denim blue mixed with silver and turquoise.  I can see it being great on top of dark, vampy colors; or as-is on my toes for summer. This is my favorite of the bunch… Even besides the name being cool, Cyberspace just makes me smile when I wear it!

Hi-Res - Another of my favorites, Hi-Res is a beautiful “slightly-darker-than-pastel” purple with rainbow shimmer. This is my second favorite… I can’t stop staring at my fingers!

HD, Digital, Hi-Res, and Cyberspace are my favorites. I had a hard time just picking one as the front-runner. These will all have a special place in my mani/pedi rotation for a long-time to come!

This Spring, Milani has two new nail polish collections: Neon and 3D Holographic. Since I’ve spotted the Neons already hitting store shelves, I am swatching those first. After a long winter, these bright polishes are sure to wake up your manicure or pedicure!

Techno Red – I had good coverage after two coats. Techno Red is a warm-based tomato red with a tiny hint of orange. It dried to a semi-matte finish (very similar to the effect you’d get if you used Orly’s Nails for Males as a top coat). I think it looks very cool, but you might not like it; however most people use top coats anyhow. For comparison, my ring finger is left without a top coat to show the semi-matte nature of this polish.

Pink Hottie – A bright Bubble Yum™ pink!! The coverage was a bit inconsistent for the first two coats so you’ll definitely want three if you want an opaque, even coverage. Semi-gloss finish (i.e. glossier than Techno Red, but not quite the standard gloss finish of most polishes). One of my favorites in this collection and most people could definitely wear this to work… it will make a fabulous pedi polish as well!

Totally 80′s – A lime-based yellow. I had some difficulty applying this color- it was blotchy, had lots of drag, and definitely requires three coats. For creativity, I topped my ring finger with Milani’s 3D holographic polish in 3D (a glittery gold). I can’t take credit for this combination- it was actually the exact look used at the Nary Manivong runway show at NY Spring/Summer 2010 Fashion Week.

Pink Rocks – A really pretty magenta-based pink. Inside (or in diffuse lighting) it looks almost red; in the sun it’s a flaming deep, hot pink. It has a bit of a jelly texture and finish to it and dried to a semi-gloss. This would be really cool with a stripe of white at the tips or base of your nails, then use two coats of Pink Rocks.
Three coats will give you opaque coverage but it’s not necessarily even- my nails had more of an ombre-faded fire look (darker towards the tips and lighter towards the nail base)… I actually loved the effect!

Awesome Orange – Just like the name implies, it’s a citrusy orange; but a deep orange-red… closer to a Blood Orange, than a glass of OJ. I can see this color working overtime on my toes this summer after I faux-tan a bit! It’s a semi-translucent polish that had even coverage with three coats. It dries to a semi-gloss finish.

Rad Purple – My absolute favorite color from this collection by far!! Rad Purple didn’t turn out so much neon, as a wine-stain. It’s a red-based purple that reminds me of what my childhood hands looked like after picking blackberries all day. Quite possibly the best purple colored polish I’ve got in all of my totes! (And yes, I nicked my pinky nail… it wasn’t the nail polishes’ fault, I was just being a klutz.)

Fresh Teal – Fancy a swim in the pool? Fresh Teal was a fully opaque color at two coats and has a high gloss finish. See my notes below under Dude Blue.

Dude Blue – Another color that had full opaque results at just two coats with a high gloss finish. In my photos of Dude Blue and Fresh Teal, I am not wearing a gloss top-coat. Both Milani’s Teal and Blue nail polishes remind me of those clear blue waters you see in island-getaway advertisements. Very summery!!

These two colors are the most pigmented from this collection… and because of that, be sure you use a good base coat. The blue coloring can give your fingertips a smurfish tinge when you go to remove it- avoid this by using a good base coat, and also coating your hands with lotion before removing the polish.

My overall thoughts on this collection… I’m not a huge fan of the opaque bottles, since you can’t tell how much is left. These polishes perform well, dry quickly, have unique colors, and are priced perfectly (around $5); plus you can pick them up at most local drugstores or at MilaniCosmetics.com!

Quite a few Bionic Beauties have written me with their horrible troubles in locating my absolute favorite brown eyeshadow, Milani’s Java Bean.

As I was digging through my makeup case this weekend, I happened upon a darn-close duplicate! Hot Topic’s makes a eye palette of 5 shadows- brown, gunmetal gray, silver, forest green, and deep purple. The brown shadow is very similar to Java Bean, with just a bit more of a warm tone.

I picked up two palette’s from Hot Topic on a whim earlier this year. The colors were pretty, the price was cheap, and I really wanted to test out their pigmentation (here’s an “Under the Sea” makeup look I created using Hot Topic eyeshadows). They wear perfectly- no creasing, barely any fallout, the colors are true. In summary, they are certainly a great buy!

The Neutral Shimmer Eye Palette is $4.99 at Hot Topic stores or at their online website. I can’t find the exact one I have with the purple and green on their website, but I still see it in all the physical Hot Topic stores.

I created this makeup look after spending Thanksgiving in the mountains of Georgia. Trees, boulders, and autumn colored leaves were everywhere! Playing off the browns and greens in nature, I used two of my favorite Milani eyeshadows- Java Bean (a cool-toned brown) and Clover (a medium true green), to create this mostly-neutral face.

A makeup look inspired by nature!

The makeup I used…

• Milani single eyeshadows in Clover and Java Bean (available at some drugstores)
• Lancome brown pencil eyeliner in Black Coffee (a deep, rich brown)
• Three Custom Color’s lipgloss in Whisper
• And my normal face makeup- Purely Cosmetics “Pure Mineral Foundation”, in California Blonde

The makeup I used to create this look.

I started by lining my upper lash line with the Lancome pencil.

Next I applied Java Bean eyeshadow across my entire lid and smudged it up into the crease. Blend the edges until it fades away (you don’t want any sharp lines where the shadow stops; especially when the goal is an organic and amped-up natural look).

The Clover eyeshadow is applied on the outer half of my upper lid. Use a large shadow brush (or your ring finger) to blend the brown and green shadows together (brown on the inner half, green on the outer half).

I used a small smudger brush to apply the Clover shadow over the Lancome eyeliner. This layering makes the green really pop since it’s layered over a darker color!

Finally, apply your favorite mascara (I’m using Blinc’s tubing mascara).

To keep lips in line with the neutral palette, I recommend a shimmery peach gloss. My absolute favorite is Three Custom Color’s Whisper gloss. I never leave home without it. I have always loved their gloss formula, but this color adapts to everyone I’ve put it on!

I was feeling a bit shimmery today, so I created an equally appropriate shimmery eye look. Of course, I had to work in my favorite green eyeshadow – Milani’s Clover.

To create this look I used….

• Flirt Cosmetics’ Lash-a-delic mascara in Boogie Brown (not my favorite mascara, but it is one of my few “true” browns)
• L’Oreal HiP cream paint eye shadow in Steely
• Milani eye shadow in Clover (check your local Walgreens and CVS)
• Anastasia Eye Lights pencil in Lace Shimmer

Since I really wanted the shimmer to stand out, I applied a base coat of L’Oreal HiP cream paint in Steely (a shimmered black) to my upper eyelid. You could also use Purely Cosmetic’s Black Opal cream shadow or elf’s cream shadow duo in Black Licorice (use the black shade, but it creases more than the other two I’ve recommended).

Using a regular shadow brush, apply Milani’s Clover eyeshadow over the black base.

Line your inner rim and as close to your upper lash line as possible with the Anastasia pencil to really set off your lashes. Also dot the pencil at the inner corners of your eyes to brighten that often dark area.

Apply a coat of brown mascara and you’re done!

I recently got a few of the Milani Runway Eyes Wet/Dry eye shadows from CVS and absolutely adore them. They can be applied as a soft wash or deep color. In the package it looks much too glittery for day wear, but once you rub the top layer off, it’s not nearly as shimmery! I highly recommend these shadows (and you can’t beat the price).

I grabbed a few of my other favorite cosmetics and created a makeup look around Milani’s Blue Lagoon.

Eye makeup by Milani, Coastal Scents, Purely Cosmetics and Pencil Me In.

Even though that’s quite a list of products, this eye makeup look is rather easy to duplicate. First apply Purely’s Nude cream shadow across your entire upper eyelid. Nude is perfect as a shadow primer- helping color adhere, allowing blendability and keeping the color application even.

Next apply Milani’s Blue Lagoon across your entire eyelid. Blend it up into the crease a bit.

Dip a small eyeshadow brush in a bit of water and pick up some of the Blue Lagoon shadow. Apply the color on the outer third of your eyelid. I find it best to “press” the damp brush against your lid rather than dragging and dusting like you would with dry shadow. The goal here is to create a deeper blue on the outer corner to add depth, interest and dimension to the look.

Using the Indigo eyeliner, line your lower lash line and your lower water line.

Using a fluffy eye shadow brush (or the tip of your middle or ring finger), dab a bit of the Hi Light Violet shadow in the inner corner of your eye (next to your nose). This helps bounce light out of that commonly dark area.

Finally apply mascara. Here I used Flirt’s Groovy Blue mascara to keep with the blue theme. However, a black mascara would look just as pretty!

I’ve been on a real color kick lately with my eye makeup. This seemed like a good transition from the brights of summer to the darks of fall. I’ll be breaking out all my mid-tones for the next few weeks to cover the “transition season”.
