Pur Minerals’ Black Amethyst Lipstick

by Bionic Beauty on 10.May.2009 · 9 comments

Back in the fall, I was majorly lusting over Pur Minerals’ Black Amethyst lipstick. It’s a gorgeous deep berry shade and was perfect for the darker lip trend.

Even without fall, I am still sporting darker lip colors occasionally. I tend to just wear whatever suits my mood rather than what follows the “trends”. Anyhow…

Product Review: Pur Minerals Starter Kit

Bionic Beauty reviews the Pur Minerals Makeup Starter Kit

By now, most makeup fans have heard of the Pur Minerals line. I was actually pretty behind the times since I do not get, nor watch, QVC. But I have tried some of Pur’s lip products, and am seriously longing for their lipstick in Black Amethyst.
Anyhow, Pur Minerals recently gave me the chance to test out their Makeup Starter Kit. Without further ado… my thoughts.

  • This kit is a good buy if you’d like to expand your mineral makeup collection, try a new brand or are brand new to mineral makeup.
  • The pressed bronzer, foundation, and blush make traveling with your minerals easy.
  • The 4-in-1 Pressed Mineral Makeup works as a concealer, foundation, powder and sunscreen (SPF 15).
  • All the kit items contain shea butter to soothe your skin.
  • While I’m not a fan of the 4-in-1 pressed powder, I did enjoy using the Marble Powder blush. It’s similar to MAC Mineralize skin finishes, without the glimmer. This created a great flush on my cheeks!
  • I was also fond of the Mineral Glow. It was handy for sculpting my cheekbones, highlighting my nose, chin and even applying it lightly on my eye lids!

  • Contains bismuth so for girls who sweat or live in warm climates this could make your face itch or burn. Bismuth is a bit of a “prickly” mineral that can seep into your pores when you sweat (because they open) and it can cause slight itching.
  • The containers are relatively small.
  • I’m disappointed that there are no mirrors in the compacts. It would make touch ups and/or traveling much easier.
  • The flat top Chisel brush sheds like a dog! I tried washing it a few times and it’s still shedding like crazy. Granted, I might have gotten a fluke. But it is nice & soft and I like the shorter length.
  • The Mineral Glow and Marble Powder (blush) both contain parabens, stearates and coconut oil. Not a big deal, but if you are allergic or have very sensitive skin, please do a small patch test first. Coconut oil is also a known comedogenic ingredient (meaning it can cause breakouts).
  • The 4-in-1 Pressed Powder felt a bit too heavy on my skin. Especially down here in Florida and due to my reactions to bismuth (it was 70 when I tested), I had to wash it off pretty quickly. Even in the short amount of time, I still broke out the next day from my testing.

Essentially, these products did not work out for me, but I realize that there are people who may love them. All I ask is that you be informed on the ingredients in mineral makeup and the reason those ingredients are present.

The Pur Minerals starter kit is $35 and is available in 10 skin tones. Have any of you ladies tried Pur Minerals? What were your experiences?

Fall 2008: Embracing the Dark Lip Trend, Part 1

by Bionic Beauty on 11.Sep.2008 · 8 comments

By now, you’ve probably heard of the fall trend for lip color… DARK. The darker, the better. Runways and fashion magazines show models sporting black lips. While it’s flattering on them, us mere mortals would have a difficult time pulling it off.

To help with the dilemma, I sat down with a multitude of lipsticks, glosses, pencils and stains, to sort out what’s wearable, what’s on trend, and what they actually look like ON your lips. I found that I simply loved the dark lip colors, as long as I found the right one with my skin tone and hair color. They were dramatic and just really, fun. I was having a ball walking around the house in all the different looks.

I also topped a few of the sticks and liners with various glosses and am posting those pictures as well. Of course, the combinations are endless. There’s certainly an option that would work for everyone. Since I tested soooo many, I’m splitting this post into a 3 part series, so check back next Thursday!

Without further delay… here are the photos…(drumroll, please!):

NARS Cosmetics’ Porte Vecchio lipstick is a sheer burgundy with a warm brown base. This is a great neutral option if your skin is sometimes tinged pink and sometimes seems olive (that’s me to a T!). As you can see, it’s actually very sheer, but you can layer it if you’d like to pump up the color. This color has been buzzed about by beauty blogger’s as an easy way to follow this fall trend, so of course, I had to try it. Cost: $24.00 at Beauty.comNARS' lipstick in Porte Vecchio

In my photo below, I used Clinique’s Defining LinerShop Clinique defining liners for lips for Lips in Pomegranate. An excellent liner for most of these dark lips, this liner is very multi-purpose and soft. Cost: $14.00

For the bargain shopper, be sure to check out Milani’s Velvet lipstick in Chic (#215). It’s a creamy, cool-toned magenta grape with full coverage, and a medium sheen. It smells amazing too! Applies nicely, I recommend using a lip liner with this one since it’s dark and full-coverage (the liner will help you color inside the lines). Cost: under $5 at your local drugstore.
