Bionic Beauty Asks - Makeup and beauty question blog article series
This week’s Bionic Asks… Do you ever match your nail polish to your dress?
This weekend I am attending a semi-fancy dinner reception. Since most of my dresses were either formal, or had a Spring season feel (pale yellows or bright polka dots), I decided to take an older dress and alter it to suit the occasion. This dress is a dark, dark navy blue topped with semi-matte sequins. The toned-down sequins make it easier to wear and less blingy for this not-so-formal event.

A nail polish adventure in Bionic-land: I attempt to match my pedicure to my matte sequined dress.

And now onto the beauty portion…

It’s always fun for me to look at other people’s Top-Rated or Best-of lists whether they are beauty related or not. Maybe it’s one of my odd quirks, but I enjoy comparing what I think should have made the list, and what items make me go “hmmm”. Total Beauty recently indulged my quirkiness by releasing their “Top-Rated Nail Polish” list…

I really have to disagree with some of their mentions. I like most all nail polish brands well-enough, especially if they have a unique color. However, Revlon coming in at seven was just bizarre to me. I always want to love their polish but every bottle I buy is too thick, and takes forever to dry… and yes, even if I apply a fast-dry topcoat it still takes forever and a day. I have tried thinning it too, but I really think nail polish formulas should come out ready-to-apply. I shouldn’t have to fiddle with a formula to make it work.

Review and Swatches: Rescue Beauty Lounge

by Bionic Beauty on 08.Feb.2010 · 9 comments

As I mentioned in my “Best of Beauty” article, I recently tried some of Rescue Beauty Lounge’s nail polishes. I’ll be the first to admit that they are pricey at $18 a bottle, so I certainly won’t be buying entire collections. But since I had heard such rave reviews on the RBL formula from fellow bloggers, I saved some moo-lah and decided to try them for myself.

RBL’s nail polish formula is truly amazing. It’s very rare that I need even a second coat for full coverage. There was no cuticle drag or tip build-up, no bubbling, and even without a top coat the polish was glossy and long-lasting. With a top coat, I got a full 3 days wear! For reference, I typically only get one day with a “normal” nail polish (like China Glaze, OPI, Zoya, etc).

My colors…
Mismas – a grape purple cream polish. There’s no shimmer or frosting; the polish dries to a HIGH shine, almost patent-leather shine. My swatch below shows one coat with no top coat. This is one of my favorites to use with a matte top coat.

Bionic’s Best of Beauty 2009 award winners!

by Bionic Beauty on 05.Feb.2010 · 22 comments

Want to know what I absolutely ADORED in 2009? I’ve gone through every skin care item, makeup product, trend, and ounce of hair care that I tested, or discovered, over the past year and came up with Bionic’s Second Annual “Best of Beauty” awards. And just for fun, I included some stuff at the end that’s not beauty related, ’cause you know… we’ve got to keep it balanced!

Fall’s big manicure trend is matte nail polish. And it seems like new matte polishes and top coats are being released every few days. That’s a bit of an exaggeration, but there are a ton of options for gals looking to try this trend. And it can all be more than a bit overwhelming.

To take some of the guesswork out of your wealth of options, I tested a variety of top coats and reviewed them in true Bionic Beauty fashion.

Matte Nail Polish top coat swatches and comparisons

Bionic Beauty compares the popular brands of matte polish top coats.

All the top coats are shown over Rescue Beauty Lounge nail polish in Mismas (from the new “Blogger” collection – a medium purple cream).

Five fingers, 5 different top coats…

  • Rescue Beauty Lounge “Matte Top Coat” – This top coat is the best I’ve tried. It provides a true matte finish that is exceptionally long lasting.

I know this brand is very pricey and I never thought I would spend $18 on a nail polish, but they are worth saving up for a few special colors (or put a few on your wish list for the holidays!). Their nail polish lasts without peeling or chipping. Typically I can’t get through 24 hours without chips and peeling, but with RBL that doesn’t happen. Their colors are super pigmented – the purple Mismas polish I’m wearing is only ONE coat! I usually do three coats with most brands. So I’m using a third less polish.
Anyhow, the RBL matte finisher is my favorite of this bunch. It’s long lasting, protects the polish underneath, and you can lightly buff any lotion or oils off (use a soft shirt or towel) to get your matte finish back. It applies smoothly- no ridges, clumping or bubbling. $18 at
