I have to be honest, I’ve put my name in a multitude of times and never received a sample from them… nor have I heard of anyone actually receiving a free sample from them. So it may not be worth your time, just a fair warning.

What do you get when you wash your hair everyday in the midst of winter? You guessed it- dry hair!
In my quest to find a solution, I came across this recipe. Time for show and tell!

Has the winter months wreaked havoc on your hair? Try this DIY cucumber hair drench!

Ingredients:

• 1 egg
• 1 eggshell’s worth of olive oil>
• 1 quarter of a peeled cucumber

Directions:

Blend the egg, olive oil and peeled cucumber together in a large bowl and spread it evenly through your hair. Leave the mixture on for at least 10 minutes and rinse thoroughly. For the best results, use this treatment monthly.
Also great during those beach and pool filled months we call summer.

Welcome to another installment of Bionic Beauty Homemade with Joycey Couture!

1 cup freshly ground dirt
4 cups chlorinated water
3 cups salt water
3 tbsp sunscreen

Add a dash of sweat and you’re set… for one harsh summer. Now of course we all know summer is coming to an end, but the heat is still raging in the majority of the USA.  Why not protect your skin and hair, and rejuvenate them for a beautiful fall!

Here are a few do-it-yourself beauty treatments that I’ve found and tested to help you do just this.  And like always, the ingredients are inexpensive and all-natural!

For the Mug

• Looking for a face mask designed for most skin types? Try this one~ Combine 1 egg yolk, 1 tablespoon of honey, 1 tablespoon of plain yogurt and 1/2 teaspoon of virgin olive oil.  Just leave the mixture on your face for 10 minutes and rinse it off.
• For oily or acne-prone skin~ Try a mask that will help soothe the skin.  Take 1 ripe banana and blend it with 1 tablespoon of honey and 1 tablespoon of lemon juice.  Leave on for 15 minutes.
• If you have dry skin~ Mix half of a mashed avocado with 1/4 cup of honey for a mask that will add tons of moisture to your face.  Leave on for 10 minutes.
• Fruit based facial toners~ Sliced strawberries, grapes and cucumbers act as natural toners to tighten skin and shrink pores.  Yum!  Just rub the slices over your skin after cleansing.  Got oily skin?  Use sliced lemons to reduce shine.

For the Locks

• To whip up a simple deep conditioner for hair~ Blend 1/4 cup of plain yogurt, 1/4 cup mayo and the whites from one egg.  Cover your hair with the mixture (using a comb to make sure it’s evenly distributed) and leave in for 30 minutes.  Then rinse!  This is a perfect solution for dry, damaged, overly beached hair.
• Clarify and get rid of product build-up~ Mix a small amount of baking soda in with your shampoo.  This will clarify your hair, making it more manageable over time. Hint: Add the baking soda into your palm, then squeeze a dollop of shampoo on top. And like Nenette from LifeCandy.net pointed out in the comments section a few weeks back, baking soda makes a great cleanser if you go with the no-shampoo routine!
• Want to lighten up your hair but don’t have the money for highlights? Who does!?  Dilute 1/2 cup of fresh lemon juice with 1/4 cup of water.  Spritz through your hair, and don’t forget your sunscreen!  Are red tones more your style?  Do the same thing, but use apple cider vinegar instead of lemon juice.

As you can see from the photograph above, Jami (aka ‘Bionic Beauty’) and I spent some great vacation time outdoors, but we also spent time testing and retesting these various recipes! I’d love to hear if you’ve tried any of the “Bionic Homemade” beauty recipes and how they are working for you.

Yeehaw! Football season is here again…  the first game was September 2nd, but who was counting? (I’m a fan, can you tell?)

Whether you’re planning to tailgate, get a few friends together to BBQ, or just relax and enjoy the nice weather… it’s likely there will be a few brews around. Even if you don’t to enjoy drinking a cold beer, a Bionic Beauty can reap the benefits of football season!

Beer Beautiful - Get gorgeous hair with this DIY recipe!

Next time you have a spare beer around try this all-natural hair rinse. The beer, in combination with the other ingredients, infuses your hair with B vitamins; plus the proteins found in malt and hops are said to repair damaged hair and boost volume. The sugars in beer (both maltose and sucrose) help close your hair’s cuticle creating a sleeker look with less frizz and more shine!

Here’s the recipe to make your own nourishing Beer Hair Rinse…

• 1 ounce distilled or clean catch rain water
• 2 teaspoons apple cider vinegar
• 7 drops lemon essential oil (you can substitute another citrus oil if you prefer)
• 1 ounce beer (stale beer works just fine!)
• 5 drops rosemary essential oil (please do not use if you are pregnant)
• 5 drops calendula essential oil (optional, but recommended for blondes to help clarify and condition your lighter hair)

Mix all the ingredients together and use as a final rinse after you shampoo and condition. Then rinse with plain water and rinse again. And don’t forget to recycle that bottle or can, of course.

I’ll be honest, I wasn’t sold on the idea that I would notice a difference in my hair. But after thorough testing, I must say this homemade recipe made my hair look shinier and feel much, much thicker than my everyday straight blonde mane.

Why not give it a swig, I mean… whirl.

This week’s Bionic Asks… What is your daily hair care routine?

I thought it would be fun to share our favorite steps in getting our locks “ready for the day”.
Here’s my usual hair routine:

1. Shampoo and condition every other day with a sulfate-free shampoo (Rinse hair very well on the days in-between),
2. Use a leave-in cream conditioner at the ends of my hair while still damp,
3. Spray a light leave-in spray conditioner (I like the ones by Paul Mitchell such as Super Strong) over my entire head,
4. Let air dry -or- if I’m in a hurry I will blow dry until just barely damp,
5. Run shine serum through ends of hair and then over the top of my hair to calm flyaways,
6. Finally, hit my curvy/wavy hair chunks with my flat iron.

Those are the basics for me. I’ll have a Bionic Asks segment upcoming to talk about your date night or special occasion hair routines. But for now, let’s hear your daily step by step process!
