Bionic Asks: How do you store your makeup?

Bionic Beauty Asks - Makeup and beauty question blog article series

This week’s Bionic Asks… How do you store your makeup, skincare and other beauty products?
Do your favorite items sit on a shelf, on the counter, or stashed in a tote or drawer?

My main makeup case is actually a craft tote from Michael’s. I got it on sale for $10. Inside I stash my eyeshadows, palettes, concealers, tinted moisturizers, blushes, false lashes, highlighters and bronzers.

This shelf holds most of my absolute favorite skincare treatments; and on the far left my hair shine serums, heat protection, and conditioning sprays.

Since my bathroom is small, I needed creative ways to fit more into the square footage. I found these hanging porcelain “pots”, cutlery containers, and hooks at Ikea. The hanging storage holds (from left to right):

  1. Mineral makeup, finishing powder, saucers, & Beauty Blender sponge
  2. My makeup brushes
  3. Mascaras and lash treatments
  4. Pencil and kohl eyeliners (my pots of gel eyeliners reside in my makeup tote above)

The shelf on top holds all my favorite perfumes and body sprays.

My lipsticks, glosses, balms, and stains are all stashed in a drawer; and then inside a round case to prevent them from rolling everywhere!

Flashback time! Here’s what some of my makeup storage looked like back in June of 2008 when I was moving half-way across the country.

Hi Jami!
Check out my storage. It’s a little nuts, but then again, my collection is a little out of control (and has been for years!)

I love your hanging pots- that idea is genius!

2 Bionic Beauty June 23, 2010 at 12:41 pm

Hey Kelly! Funny how we are, yet again, on the same wavelength and both posted in June about our storage systems. 🙂

And thanks for the compliments about the hanging pots. They *really* saved me space in my tiny bathroom and also help me get ready quicker since everything is out in the open.

Looking at your pictures, I have a few comments/questions:
*I have those same plastic drawer storage bins!! I keep mine packed with hair products in the cabinets under my sink.
*I have the same pink flat iron I think. Is it the Hana mini flat iron?
*Where did you get the cool mirror on your main table? The one with the scroll “iron” work stand?

I’m thinking of redoing a nook in my bedroom to be a makeup nook like yours. Right now it’s full of my horse saddles and a chest of drawers that hold: Top 4 drawers- to be reviewed items; Bottom 2 drawers: Jami’s already reviewed but absolute favorites.
And there’s a basket in my closet that holds duplicates that I somehow ended up with that will be used for this year’s charity auctions (for Karma Dogs! eeek!), random reader giveaways, etc.
I’m overflowing!! Even though it’s semi-organized over-flowage…. in this post I didn’t even go into the stuff I have stored in my bedroom. I’ll have to do those too (I have 8 rubbermaid totes under my bed full of products *ducks and hides*), and I have a post coming up about my nail polish collection. I seriously need help getting that organized!

Jami, I have a storage container that has 10 drawers. 5 hold my mineral shadows, 1 has my eye palettes, one has compacts and blush, there is one for glosses and lipsticks, one for liners and mascara, and one foundations. All my skin care products are in one drawer in my vanity (they take up the whole drawer) and then I have another drawer for hair items and products.

5 drawers of mineral shadows?!? Ooooo, I want to visit!!! I’ll bring the orchids if I can have a peak at that drawer. 🙂

I saw that hanging rack / pots type thing at iKea and I thought it would be fab for brushes! it’s nice to see how it works for you.

Here’s my most recent organization:

I love my 2 10 drawer units, and my helmer.
I REALLY want to find a nice vanity though, with drawers.

6 Bionic Beauty June 23, 2010 at 10:36 pm

Phyrra, First, I LOVE your hair. 🙂 I had pink streaks awhile ago, and I’m wanting to go blue again in the near future. Maybe this fall when life settles down a bit and I have more time to dedicate to my hair.

I adore your drawer units and the Helmer is a great idea for nail polish! I can see myself spray painting it various colors and then taking a sharpie or paint pens to it to doodle designs all over…. I can never leave anything from Ikea alone. ha ha! Good luck on your vanity hunt. In the meantime, I think your setup looks fabulous!

Yay thank you! I love the fuchsia front and dark red back 🙂

Glad you like the set up 🙂 It works, I just keep lusting for a more solid vanity!

Hi Robyn, That’s a great idea with the mesh/net pouches. I have little brush protectors that I love, those might be good for you if you end up with bent bristles at all. I got mine at Purely Cosmetics, here’s my review: Not saying they are a must, but I just thought of them when you mentioned your storage situation and having to tote stuff around.

That’s not very nice of your roomies… they should at least contribute if they wanted to use stuff up. I’m selfish on my favorites too. I hoard my Herbaria Soaps; L’Oreal EverPure shampoo and conditioner; Physician’s Formula Mineral Wear mascara; Blinc mascara; my Purely Cosmetics’ foundation & Diamond Perfect Finishing (DPF) powder; and my Bobbi Brown and Three Custom Color lip glosses and lipsticks. Not to mention I *really* start smacking hands if anyone comes near my YBF or Lexli skincare stash. Thankfully it’s just me and one family member at my house. I share most everything else in my beauty collection, but not my absolute faves. 🙂 So I can totally relate!

10 Robyn @ PurelyCosmetics (the other Robyn) June 23, 2010 at 7:53 pm

I see I can’t just be Robyn around this joint, lol. That so beats my Tower of Terror!

11 Bionic Beauty June 23, 2010 at 8:27 pm

Hi other Robyn , Yes, now we have two Robyn’s on BB. But that’s okay, you both write in completely different styles so I always know.

I really need to get some sort of tower with drawers thing for my room to stash the extra stuff in… the stuff that isn’t in my daily rotation but that I still want to keep around. Maybe it’ll be another trip to Ikea, except that darn place always blows my budget. I go in for a candle, two pillow cases, and a picture frame- and I end up coming out with curtains to cut up into new craft projects, shelving systems to create new cages for my critters, new pillow covers, and new pillows with inserts to prop behind me while I blog. Like I said… it’s bad for my budget, but oh so much fun. Especially when you get into Ikea Hacking!! I heart hacking Ikea products into new thingy-ma-jiggies. 😉

12 Amanda June 25, 2010 at 2:03 pm

Well, let’s see here… I keep my foundation, concealor, eyeliner and mascara in a small old makeup bag which is in a basket since stuff in the bag overflows in the bathroom since those are things I use every day. I also keep my brushes and crap makeup that I am trying to use and get rid of in there. I have a red Guerlain makeup box one of my neighbours gave me years ago that I keep all my lip glosses in. That’s pretty much full. Seriously, whenver I open it there’s just a strong scent of fruity gloss!!! My lipsticks stand ontop of a small box on my dresser, my nail polishes are lined across my bookshelf, and my fragrances across the top of my computer desk. Phew!

13 Bionic Beauty July 1, 2010 at 9:31 pm

Amanda, It sounds like you have quite the stash of lipglosses too! I’m glad I am not the only one. 😉 Like you, I enjoy having my fragrances out in view – I seem to wear a variety of them more that way since I don’t have to dig for them.

14 Brandy in VA June 25, 2010 at 3:27 pm

My makeup storage is a little crazy. I have some things in the medicine cabinet, I have a three-drawer plastic bin where I have most makeup, I have some in a drawer under the bathroom sink, and the rest is in a pretty red case under the sink.

15 Bionic Beauty July 1, 2010 at 9:42 pm

Hi Brandy, At least you know where to find everything- that’s the most important thing! Like how I have stuff scattered around my room, in various areas of my bathroom, and extras/spares in totes under my bed. It may seem crazy, but I can (usually) find everything. Your red case sounds nice, by the way!

16 Kristen June 25, 2010 at 3:44 pm

I keep most of my makeup in our linen closet. I’ve take over a whole shelf filled with containers/bins that hold all of my makeup and skincare. For the items that I use everyday, I keep them in a makeup bag that I can bring into the bathroom, or wherever I end-up putting my makeup on. Some of the items that I don’t wear much, but that I don’t want to discard yet, are stored in one of my bureaus. The key thing with all of my makeup is that I do not store it in my bathroom. The heat and humidity is terrible for makeup so by keeping it away from these elements it helps it last longer and to stay in better shape…so they say at least.

17 Bionic Beauty July 1, 2010 at 9:49 pm

Kristen, You sound very organized! I like the idea of using a shelf in the linen closet with bins. That way you have plenty of room but everything is tucked away and not hanging out in the open. Great idea!

18 Mary B. June 25, 2010 at 8:09 pm

I store my makeup in a several cosmetic bags grouped in color groups. The rest of my stuff I keep in a makeup case by my vanity or on top of it.

19 Bionic Beauty July 1, 2010 at 9:52 pm

Mary, I love your color sorting method! I have my mineral eyeshadows sorted by color – in rainbow order, then the grays, blacks and browns. Since they are typically in little pots or envelopes I use a red box that seems to fit them perfectly. However, I do admit when I’m in a rush, I just toss stuff back into the box and sort it out later. 😉

20 Bailee June 27, 2010 at 5:12 pm

i really love the hanging pots! my makeup/skincare/toiletries/perfumes take up a lot of space everywhere! i’ve started buying makeup bags, and i’ll leave one on my dresser with my everyday products, next to a tiny bin with three drawers that i try to keep stuff seperate. thats the bin for things i use frequently but not every day. the rest is in drawers, and sadly enough, one whole dresser top is all perfume, spritzes, and some lotion. it really gets out of hand, but next time im shopping i’ll definatly look “outside the box” for some of the handy storage methods you mentioned. thanks!
: )

21 Bionic Beauty July 1, 2010 at 9:55 pm

Hi Bailee, I’m glad I could inspire you a bit! Another thing I use, is one flat basket from the office supply store. It’s woven out of banana leaves (my bedroom is sort of tropical crossed with retro and some old-style library thrown in), and was made to store 8.5 x 11″ paper – like an inbox for people at work. However, I keep it on top of one of my dressers and it holds my extra perfumes and lotions perfectly! I can still see them peeking over the top so I know what’s in there, but they blend into my room’s decor.

Let me know how your progress goes! I always love hearing about & seeing other people’s methods of organizing! Most importantly, have fun. 🙂
