Milwaukee’s Susan G. Komen Race For The Cure actually already happened (we seem to do it earlier than everyone else, in September), but they completed their goal of raising $1 million. Woo! I’m a little sad that I wasn’t home to have helped, but they seem to have done rather well, so that’s super.

The New Orleans Saints are also participating:

“October 7-8 Designated NFL Breast Cancer Awareness Weekend
Across NFL Stadiums

The New Orleans Saints and the National Football League will support October’s National Breast Cancer Awareness Month with national public service announcements, special pregame ceremonies and team community outreach. The NFL has designated the weekend of October 7-8 as NFL Breast Cancer Awareness Weekend.

The Saints and the rest of the league will promote breast cancer awareness messages during that weekend with a number of pregame and in-stadium initiatives:

• Team Captains Presentation: Each home team will name honorary team captains from the community, who have been touched by breast cancer or are involved in fighting the disease. Honorary captains will be invited onto the field for the pre-game coin toss, where captains from each club will deliver a bouquet of pink roses to them. In New Orleans, prior to the coin toss, Kelly Martin, the wife of QB Jamie Martin, will represent the Saints as the Honorary Captain. Mrs. Martin is the survivor of breast cancer.

• “Pins That Touch Hearts”: Team coaches, management and game staff personnel will wear pink ribbon/NFL shield pins during the October 7-8 games. Each member of the Saints’ staff on the sideline, as well as the Saints’ senior management team, will also be wearing the pink ribbons.

• Pink Gatorade Towels: Players will use special-edition pink Gatorade towels on the sidelines during the games. Players will autograph these towels and other pink merchandise, which will be put up for bid on NFL Auction (nflauction.nfl.com), with proceeds going to breast cancer charities.

• Stadium Give-Aways: Together with Lifetime Television, teams will give away pink ribbon “temporary tattoos” to fans attending games on October 7-8. These pink ribbon tattoos will also be distributed with all purchases made via NFLShop.com during the month of October. The first 10,000 fans to enter the Superdome will be presented with the temporary tattoos.

• Local Team Events: Many teams will extend the national platform with local grassroots efforts. Teams will designate home games in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month and plan special in-stadium or pregame events with local organizations.
Saints’ LB Scott Fujita’s mother, a two-time breast cancer survivor, will be honored with Scott wearing a pink Saints hat during the open locker room time with the media in an effort to bring attention to Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

NFL Breast Cancer Awareness Weekend will be highlighted with features on NFL.com and on the NFL Network.”

Thank you for helping spread the word.
