Besides sunscreen, mascara is probably the second thing I reach for when I want a quick “makeup” routine before running out the door. When L’Oreal sent me their new Bare Naturale Mascara to trial (it hits stores this month), I started right in with my testing.

I adore the packaging on this mascara. The slight animal print/safari tube and silver cap grab attention and give it a polished appearance. The wand is sturdy (have you ever opened a new mascara only to discover that the darn wand is floppy? I *hate* that.) and the brush is a very gentle bristle brush. I typically prefer the new rubber “comb” style brushes over the bristle brushes, but this one is so soft it is truly gentle on your eyes.

The formula itself is gentle as well, leaving out some of the nastier chemicals that many drugstore mascaras contain. The formula wears well, but it seemed to take forever to dry! I blinked after a minute or so, and ended up with mascara lines on my upper and lower lids. And definitely don’t sneeze for about 5 minutes after you apply this mascara.

The mascara doesn’t really add tons of length or curvature, but it does a nice job of looking natural and darkening your lashes. And there weren’t any flakes, smudges, and other ickies (once it dried…). If you are after a low-key mascara for more “natural” days, this mascara is probably worth a shot.
My only draw back is that drying time… but then again, I can be a bit impatient. 😉

L’Oreal’s Bare Natural Mascara is available at local drugstores and mass market retailers or online at Drugstore.com for $9.95.L'Oreal Bare Naturale Mascara

I’ve been curious about this new mascara. Good information and great points to consider.

Jen and Elizabeth, Thanks for the comments. Let me know if you gals decide to give this mascara a whirl. I brought it on my trip this weekend…I never pack my absolute favorites while traveling in fear of them getting confiscated by airport security or lost. And it did well and was nice and gentle on my eyes. I like that it didn’t irritate my eyes like the Maybelline versions seem to.

Mascara always makes my eyes burn, but this one doesn’t! For that reason, I like it, but you’re right, it doesn’t do much in the curling or lengthening dept.

Vanessa, Thank you for sharing your experience with this mascara too! I’ve actually been using it on low-makeup days or when I’m just staying home. It’s nothing dramatic, like you said, but it’s so gentle!
