New ways to browse Bionic Beauty

by Jami Summers on April 29, 2010 · 7 comments

As I mentioned earlier this week, I’ve been doing some upgrades on Bionic Beauty. For those of you who (still) use Internet Explorer, you should now have full access to the drop-down navigation menu that is under my header graphic.

I also cleaned up those categories a bit- I still have a little more consolidating to do- but this should help everyone find articles by topic a bit easier.

If you’re a Bionic Beauty reader who uses Firefox, Chrome, Safari or another modern internet browser- things should look pretty much the same.

Achieve Powerful Beauty with the Bionic Beauty blog!

While I’m here with this “Site News”, I want to remind everybody about the search field in the very upper right of your screen. Simply type in what you’re looking for and hit the enter button on your keyboard.

Prefer to browse by brand? In the far right sidebar, there is a drop-down menu. Pick the brand you want, and then hit the “Go” button.

And for those moments when you just want to browse through the almost 2000 articles on Bionic Beauty, you can click on the “Surprise Me” graphic in the right sidebar. You’ll be magically whisked off to a random article! It’s a fun way to find some older stuff you might have missed!

There will be more upgrades launching soon… In the meantime, feel free to use the Contact form or comment below and let me know your thoughts, questions, or suggestions!

Stay Bionic,

Jami - author and editor of the Bionic Beauty blog

Thanks for the “heads-up” and further info updates! I usually view the site on my cell phone (but also at the library). That may figure into how it displays and works for me. I’ve noticed that the commenter’s name and e-mail address don’t auto-populate anymore, after submitting a comment. I see that what would be the top of the site looks a tad different. So far, I haven’t tried anything out, other than to — surprise — post a comment.

I meant, not that the e-mail and name don’t auto-populate, but that they don’t *remain* after posting a comment. It does, however, read, “You’re already subscribed to this article.”, after posting. Sorry for any confusion.

As always, Tashi, thank you for checking things over. One of the upgrades I’m planning to BB is a mobile-optimized site for us on-the-go types. I end up looking stuff up on here quite often from my phone when I’m out & about and a friend asks me a question about a product or something. It loads pretty well on my Android phone, and my Blackberry; but all the graphics make it take awhile. So I’m designing a version that should load a little quicker.

I did move some stuff around at the top. Mainly rearranged the order of the menu and shortened some the names of categories to *hopefully* make them a bit clearer on what they are. And I evened things up a bit so all the widths match. My header graphic was a bit narrower than the rest of the site, so it always looked “off” to me. Now everything should be the same width. Let me know if you see anything wonky.

As for the name/email thing, I actually stopped using cookies on BB, in hopes that readers will feel safer & more private while they browse. But yes, it does make the fields “not remember” who you are… so that causes some extra typing if you are commenting on multiple articles. There’s always an up & a down side.

And since I only have Google’s Chrome, Safari and Firefox on my computer- the site looks okay on those. But I haven’t checked in IE.

A friend who pointed out that my drop-down menus weren’t working in IE (she told me about a year ago) said this new version is working for her now. I’ve been meaning to get the nav menu fixed since then, but life and pumping out articles kept me too busy! Argh. At least now they’re working! :-)

Hey, thanks! :-) I’m at a normal computer, as we speak, and the changes seem to be working fine for me. Internet Explorer, in case you were wondering. I look forward to the mobile-adapted version, woohoo! :-D And you’re welcome for the input. No prob. Thank YOU for trying to make stuff so user-friendly. Regardless of how I read your site, I manage to navigate and use whatever pretty easily, even on my phone (with some exceptions, of course — my model phone is a year-and-a-half old, so, you know, “ANCIENT” by tech standards).

P.S. I still get cookies when viewing the site (not the chocolate chip kind, unfortunately). Maybe that’s a cell phone or provider thing. I’ll have to check on a normal computer. Not sure how it is there. Whatever the case, I always clear out cookies frequently.

Hey Tashi, Those cookies are from my advertisers, like Google Adsense. If anyone is interested in the fun legal reading, I explain them all in my Privacy Policy. Warning- it’s not interesting reading, but may help you understand why & how cookies are used.

But!! Those advertiser’s cookies aren’t getting your email addresses, etc. I never allow those to be shared. :)

No big deal. :-) I wasn’t too worried. But thanks!! Maybe for chuckles sometime, I’ll read the privacy policy.
