I redyed my grays today and it worked perfectly. I left the color on 15 minutes and used the hairdryer. I think this is the happiest I have ever been with a home dye job! Thanks so much!

I really like L’Oreal’s EverPure Sulfate Free shampoo & conditioner. I believe they have a volumizing option as well. Their UV Spray is great for extra conditioning or sunny days too. But the “leave-in conditioner gel” is not too great- it’s the only product in that line that really doesn’t live up to the rest. L’Oreal had freebies up of these recently, I’m not sure if they are still active.
On the non-drugstore side- I really like Davine’s, Kiehl’s new sunflower shampoo & conditioner (review to come), and AG Hair Cosmetics “Colour Savour” shampoo/conditioner (LOVE this one as much as the L’Oreal EverPure). Hope that helps!!

Thanks, Jami. I will let you know how it turns out. I guess I will need color protecting shampoo. What do you recommend that is inexpensive and I can get at Sally Beauty or the grocery store. If you had a recommendation for something volumizing that would be wonderful.

When I miss grays, or need more coverage, I condition like you did, then rinse the conditioner out really well. Let my hair air dry a bit. Then apply some more color to the grays. You can also blast them with heat from your hair dryer (on high is fine, just don’t burn yourself by getting to close to your head!) every 10 minutes. The heat helps open the cuticle so the color can soak in better. I don’t recommend this for everyone since some people’s hair is very porous. if they added head, the color could come out super dark… but since your resistant strands sound just like mine, I’m giving you my “Top Secret Tips”. (wink wink!)

So in short, finishing them up today should be fine. or you can wait. Really whatever is easiest for you. I usually just do it all at once because I always put it off until the last possible minute before a family gathering, date, event, etc. And then I’m in “must do it now” mode.

It’s great how much money it saves, right?!? Makes you realize how much salons are making on a color process when they charge $60+ for a color.

The Ion shampoos & conditioners are really good as well. i haven’t tried them all, but they are cheap and I typically try a new one whenever my stash runs low. I love them all so far!

Okay, The color on the rest of my hair looks great, it is just a few grays in the front. I conditioned my hair after coloring. Should I wash it tomorrow before coloring those last few grays? I can’t believe how inexpensive this was compared to the boxes at the store.

Jessica, You can take that brush and put a little extra on top of the grays. I usually touch them up every few minutes (or check them to add more color if I need too). Sorry!!! I totally forgot to mention that before. Go put some on now… and worst case, add some when you get out of the shower on the stubborn areas for 10-15 minutes then rinse again.

I am about 10 minutes until I am ready to rinse the color out. I am hoping what still looks like grays are just lighter brown.

The ion dye was a lot easier to apply with the brush instead of the bottle from the grocery store stuff.

Hi Jessica, I usually wait a full 24 hours (and try not to use any hair products like shine additives, etc) during that time. That way your scalp has built up some of it’s own natural oils which do two things:
1. Protect your scalp from the hair color chemicals (which aren’t nearly as bad as many people freak out about, so don’t worry. /grin/)
2. The oils also protect your scalp from being “colored”. That’s how I avoid looking like some of those women you see going around with brown or red parts and scalps.

Hi Jami!
I went up to Sally Beauty today and got everything I need. I had so much fun there! The lady working was really great.
I washed my hair this morning, can I color tonight or should I wait until tomorrow when my hair is dirty?
