Reviews: My search for a performance mascara

by Bionic Beauty on 06.Aug.2007 · 9 comments

A few month’s back I ventured out onto that inevitable search for the holy grail of mascara. I was unhappy with the performance of my current mascara. I was experiencing the usual complaints- clumping, smudging, flaking.

I picked over 10 classics and newcomers to the mascara world for my product review test. Since the initial phase, I narrowed down the review to the four best performers: Maybelline Great Lash MascaraMaybelline Great Lash mascara, CoverGirl Fantastic Lash MascaraCoverGirl Fantastic Lash mascara,L’Oreal Voluminous MascaraL'Oreal Voluminous mascara, and Physician’s Formula Mineral Wear MascaraPhysician's Formula Mineral Wear Mascara.
And now for my mascara test results…

The Maybelline Great Lash caused an eye reaction on my second day using it. I used this mascara back in high school with no problems. Either the formula changed or I have more sensitive eyes. In any case, I ended up with large blood spots on the whites of my eyes for 2 weeks (not pretty…). Needless to say, I had to chuck it. Sad, since I loved this mascara growing up.

The CoverGirl performed well, but it did smudge. I have since rebought this in the waterproof formula for summer days at the lake and pool and it is *Fantastic*! The mascara doesn’t add a LOT of volume or length, but in the waterproof version it holds up well for a day of outdoor fun.

L’Oreal’s Voluminous – This mascara heftily inflated my lashes. My lashes looked much thicker and a tad longer, but by the day’s end I had a flakes, and more than a few smudgies. This mascara might be great if you live in a drier climate- but in the humid south, it’s definitely NOT the perfect choice.

The Physician’s Formula Mineral Wear Mascara is now my favorite. It makes my lashes super long (SO long that they bump into my eye glass lenses!!), it’s very affordable ($7.95 at Drugstore.comPhysician's Formula Mineral Wear Mascara), it’s talc-free, easy to find, doesn’t clump/flake/smudge or otherwise ruin my eye look.

There are no stinging fumes in my eyes and the packaging is sleek and understated. However, the rubberized brush does take some getting used to. But now, I have a hard time figuring out how I got mascara on my lashes before this unique brush- it finds EVERY single little lash! There’s one side for your top lashes and the other side of the brush is miniaturized for easy application to your bottom lash line. This brush really is ground-breaking. It gives volume to every lash and builds length without looking like Tammy Fay. I have had many people ask if I’m wearing lash extensions or falsies with this mascara. Absolutely a BIONIC BUY!
