Bionic Asks: Suggestions for organizing my nail polish?

by Jami Summers on June 30, 2010 · 8 comments

Bionic Beauty Asks - Makeup and beauty question blog article seriesI’m in desperate need of suggestions to help me get my nail polish “collection” under control. I figured I would open up the discussion on Bionic Beauty in hopes that you all have some ideas.

My polishes currently reside in three totes. One soft sided case holds all my nail art pens, polishes, stickers, and special effects top coats (like glimmer, holographic, etc).

The second tote is an ancient Caboodle! This one holds random nail polishes in the bottom section; gloss and matte top coats in the left drawer; and my OPI Designer Series polishes in the right drawer.

The third tote is a fishing tackle box. The top tray holds my selection of “current favorites” plus my base coats; the middle tray is mini-sized polish, a few more favorites (my Milani 3D Holographics!) and my few Rescue Beauty Lounge polishes. The bottom section is huge and holds the rest of my nail colors.

And so this week’s Bionic Asks Do you have any ideas on organizing my nail polish stash? I’d prefer to use the totes I have, or at the very least, find a cheap alternative. I’m on a very limited budget. Ideas? Suggestions?

Stay Bionic,

Jami - author and editor of the Bionic Beauty blog

Phyrra, I think after seeing your Helmer, I’m sold on it and Ikea is having a SALE right now! The only problem is I’ll spend way too much because I’ll end up coming out with not just a Helmer but 3 blue bags full of other fun stuff. ;)

Well, first off………..I looked about the same way at one time. After examining them, I threw out old ones, put all the colors in groups, and then asked myself this, ok I have 12 red 8 pink, etc. do I really need them all? So, because I use to work for the Airlines, and traveled alot I collected complimentary soaps, toothpaste, etc., I donated the polish and complimentary toiletries to a local womens battered shelter.
They are on a second journey in life and have nothing, used or not they appreciate anything they receive. “Giving a little” means giving alot to some people.

Hi Robyn,
I love all my colors in those totes (I’m a polish nut, what can I say? ), but I do always keep a stash that I donate twice yearly of all sorts of beauty products to my local women’s shelter. Last Christmas, I ended up bringing 4 huge bags to them! :) I donate mine to Genesis House which was also one of the charities that last year’s Charity Auctions on Bionic Beauty benefited. You are so very right – those items are very much appreciated by the women at the shelter and it really brightens their days to get things to pamper themselves with. I know face masks and body lotions aren’t essentials, but they really do help the women feel better and have a little fun at the same time!

I know quite a few bloggers have started efforts like this as well. Small things that we can do, actually can make a difference!

Jami, how about the organizers that you put in the pantry to stack can goods on? Or the drawer bins that you can get at Wal-Mart and organize each drawer by color or brand. I have to agree with Robyn, try to at least get rid of any old ones, especially any that are starting to dry out.

Stacy, You’re gonna get a kick out of this… up until last year I had an Avon nail polish that was my Grandmom’s from at least 20 years ago! And it wasn’t even dry. I did end up throwing that one away though due to all the old chemicals, ick. I really like your idea of drawer organizers. Even if I get the Ikea Helmer, then those organizers would work perfectly. And Ikea has the custom drawer organizers you drop in and can rearrange to suit your needs! Thank you!!

Holy mac and cheese, Jami — you’ve got as many nail polishes as I have lipsticks, lip glosses, and lip balms!! ;-) (just giving you a bad time for fun) But I’m one to talk — I have oodles of purses and tote bags that I have collected over the years. I’m not sure exactly how to suggest better organization, but it seems that you’ve already gotten some super ideas, if not solved your problem already. :-) Personally, I store my two measley bottles of polish in my fridge. However, I do like the tackle box idea for your stuff. I use a Caboodles “tackle box” from Target for my makeup. But I’m wondering if a regular tackle box from the hardware store would be even better, as the compartments aren’t always best for my needs, ironically. But I digress…. Hope you indeed solved your polish placement predicament!

The tackle boxes are AWESOME for storing makeup and organizing. As are the craft totes you can find at Micheals… however, be sure to check your local Ross/Marshalls/TJ Maxx for old style craft boxes, etc. They put them there are crazy low prices!! ;-)

I’m thinking a trip to Ikea is in my future for my nail polish storage… ruh roh… LOL!
