Bionic’s Tip: Crystal or Glass nail files

Cosmetic, makeup and skin care tips from Bionic Beauty
Personally I was so very tired of buying new nail files and emery boards when I wore mine out. It seemed like I was going through them non-stop. Granted I get quite a few for free (just checkout at your Walgreens “Cosmetics Counter” and ask if they have a basket of free gifts- usually they have lip balms, sample size lotions, nail files, lipsticks, etc. All BRAND NEW and free for the taking!).

Anyhow, my nails being brittle and weak, they constantly fray and break. So I have to touch up my filing at least twice a week.

I found a much more eco-friendly and wallet friendly option. Crystal or glass nail files. With my testing nature, I picked up one of each at my local Sally Beauty Supply. The crystal was pink and almost like a slightly rough stone file. It worked well enough- but if you have weaker nails like mine, I wouldn’t suggest this option. It’s best for stronger nailed gals or those with acrylics. My recommendation: The Revlon Crystal Nail FileRevlon Crystal Nail file at which is $7.99 at

The other option: glass files. Mine is by Swissco, and was $6.29 at Sally. It’s perfect for the purse or at home use. It files gently and easily and even better, it doesn’t tear up my nails. I LOVE this file!! And… it lasts forever. So no more pitching and re-purchasing!

To help weak or brittle nails, drink lots of milk. Milk really does a body good. :-) Those nail files sound great. I’m just too lazy to use them, and I don’t paint my nails.

Hi Jami-

Received my Bionic-Beauty prize package on Saturday and I am thrilled! All the items are much appreciated! Thank you so much!!
As for this glass nail file, I might give this a try. I am not the best manicurist, and this sounds as though it might help.
Again, thank you!

Yvonne, I’m glad to hear the package arrived okay. I hope you really enjoy the products!

The glass file really helped me since the regular emery boards just ruined my weak nails. I’ve had lots of practice, of course, but I believe these glass files are the way to go. So much easier!!

Forgot to ask — if I get one of those nail files/emery boards (if I finally get my act in gear for nail care), how should it be cared for? Gentle soap and water? Dawn dish soap and water? Maybe a simple question, but I’ve never been much of a nail file user, so I’d love input. Thanks!

Tashi, You’re right. Milk does do a body good! I never drink it though. :) I really should, but just can’t stand the taste. I’ve never liked it. But… I *do* eat lots of yogurt, cheese, and ice cream. So I figure that counts. Plus I take quite a few calcium supplements.

As for the nail file care- I really just rinse mine every once and a while. You could clean it with hand soap I’d imagine. Or whatever you use for your makeup brushes. They are really very durable- just don’t do what I did- and accidentally pitch it across the cement floor. Oops. :( I had to go back to Sally’s for another one. I’m addicted to these files. My nails have never been nicer! I don’t feel like I’m tearing them up when I shape them anymore!

Hey, Jami, thanks! :-) I’ve been a huge milk drinker all my life, so that’s no prob for me. I’d say those other dairy products do count for at least some benefits for your nails, etc. (I’m no nutritionist.) Have you tried different kinds of milk? I was raised on, and prefer skim. But some people hate that one. Lots of water too, of course, helps everything.

I think I may wash the glass file with liquid hand soap or Dawn dish soap. I usually use a wee bit of my nicer shampoo for hand washing my makeup brushes. I’ll get back to ya if I buy the glass file. I’m leaning towards it. I should get into a better nailcare routine.
